Hunter Dunn, a spokesperson, described the 50501 group as a “pro-democracy, pro-Constitution, anti-executive overreach, nonviolent grassroots movement.”
The group says it has acted as a channel for people outraged by the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies, reduction of the federal workforce, and sweeping executive actions that his critics warn have plunged the country into a constitutional crisis.

PROTEST OUTSIDE VICE PRESIDENT, JD VANCE’S RESIDENCE IN WASHINGTON, D.C., APRIL 19, 2025: between 300-400 people lined both sides of Massachusetts Avenue, otherwise known as “Embassy Row” along a 4-lane street beside the secured U.S. Naval Observatory compound where VPs and their families live while in office. Nice neighborhood. I don't think you can see the street from the home and, obviously, the public can't get anywhere near it.
The barricaded entrance to the compound is the one location where public protest is allowed, and so, we go. The VP's family wouldn't have been bothered from here. The crowd made a show of resistance to those driving by and, frankly, the majority of drivers (its a busy throughfare), bore down on their horns in enthusiastic support. Those who attended were smart, confident, and energetic. Many, or likely most, have “skin in the game”; they know of what they speak!
The police presence was muted and friendly - just saw 3 police cars standing by and 2 Secret Service officers on bicycles cruising up and down the sidewalk to keep it clear and make sure we stayed peaceful. We did, but not without loudly and boisterously exercising our foundational American rights!
There is a robust resistance to this administration's agenda across the country in places big and small. As there should be. The dismantling of this country is well underway. Facing down an emerging competitive authoritarian regime isn't something Americans have ever had to do – at least not to this extent!
WE’VE NEVER HAD A PRESIDENT THAT BREAKS THE LAW AND THUMBS HIS NOSE AT THE CONSTITUTION SO BLATANTLY, SO OVERWHELMINGLY, OR SO QUICKLY. IT REQUIRES A BLATANT, OVERWHELMING AND QUICK RESPONSE FROM FREEDOM-LOVING AMERICANS.
Many have never been moved to protest before; the seriousness of the threat is made evident by millions of normally content people rising to stand together against this attempted autocratic take down of our democracy. We are not Putin's Russia or Orban's Hungary.
We are free people and we intend to stay that way. Show up at your next available protest!
Today, I stood for an hour and a half outside the encampment at Victoria Street and Weber Street, holding a sign, raising my voice, and standing in protest against By-law 25-021 — a policy that criminalizes survival and displaces the unhoused without offering a single plan for support. As a an autistic individual headphones were a necessity thing for me.
I’m tired. But I’m not giving up.
Because even in my exhaustion, I received thumbs up, honks, words of encouragement from people passing by. Strangers who stopped to say: “Thank you.” People who saw, maybe for the first time, what this by-law truly means. And that gives me hope.
People are waking up.
But now, we need more than honks — we need action.
I am calling on everyone who believes in justice, dignity, and human rights to email the Region of Waterloo Council and tell them this is not okay. Tell them you support my message. Tell them what I witnessed today is not what our community stands for.
