Fear and Loathing: Closer to the Edge

Some people like their truth factory-sealed, wrapped in a shiny credential, and stamped with a "verified source" label like it just rolled off the assembly line at the Ministry of Official Narratives. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re in the wrong place. Closer to the Edge doesn’t deal in prepackaged reality—we deal in the raw, unfiltered, and occasionally dangerous truth, which is precisely why our writers stay anonymous. In a world where honesty can get you doxxed, fired, or chased by a pitchfork-wielding MAGA mob screaming about "election fraud" between bites of their MyPillow promo codes, we’d rather keep our people safe.

As for sources—sure, we could lace every article with footnotes and hyperlinks, but let’s be real: a name and a citation don’t mean much in a world where half of Washington is reading scripts written by billionaires and lobbyists. Sources can be biased, corrupt, cherry-picked, or outright fabricated, and if you need proof of that, just look at the gibbering circus act that is the modern Republican Party. These are people who think "alternative facts" are a valid concept and that the guy who bankrupted a casino somehow knows how to fix the economy. You think they care about good sourcing?

Besides, bogging our writing down with a mess of citations and academic formalities would wreck the flow faster than a Senate hearing on TikTok. Our job isn’t to hand-hold people through a bibliography—we’re here to tell the story as it is, from the trenches, with all the blood, chaos, and absurdity intact. If you want a research paper, head to JSTOR. If you want the truth with its teeth bared, you’re in the right place.

That said, we encourage skepticism—real skepticism, not the brand sold by right-wing grifters who slap “DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH” on whatever lunatic conspiracy they’re peddling this week. If something seems off, don’t take our word for it—dig deeper, cross-check, and, above all, don’t let anyone spoon-feed you a narrative just because they slapped a blue checkmark on it.

At the end of the day, Closer to the Edge isn’t here to make friends, kiss the ring of corporate media, or play nice with people who think “fake news” is anything that makes Trump look bad. We’re here to rip the mask off, call out the bullshit, and stay one step ahead of the mob. If that makes some people uncomfortable, good. It means we’re doing something right.

This is NOT the post to comment general support, pictures, cheerleading, etc. To keep it on topic and easy to follow, we'll delete comments regularly as protests go by, and we'll also be deleting comments that aren't advertising a specific protest, even if the comments are comedy gold. The Resistance

Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street is a people-powered movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square and spread to over 1,500 cities globally.

It only takes a single light to abolish the darkness.

One candle. One window. One movement.

We the people are experiencing a time unseen in our country’s history when the enemy is coming from within.
We are living in fear.
We are overcome with hopelessness. And anger.
Even as we fight, protest, call our Senators, and sign petitions, there is a dread that we are watching the end of the United States, the end of democracy.
Many of us are exerting as much force and pushing back, fighting for our freedoms, and using our Constitutional rights while we still have them. If you are not, you should be. This is no time to remain silent or be complacent.
Our greatest strength is one another and that we are doing this together. There is power in numbers. Power in unity.
A new passive movement is spreading on social media. Sponsored by the 50501 movement, it is a symbol of peaceful protest and a time to reflect and set intentions.
It is gentle.
But it is formidable.
The flame has been ignited
The 50501 Movement: One Candle, One Window, One Movement.

“But even an ordinary secretary or housewife or a teenager can, within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room.” ~ Miep Gies

Place a candle, battery, or solar suggested for safety reasons, in your window. Show that you stand with those who will not bow down to the darkness.
They cannot dim our light.
The hope is in the light. Keep going. Keep up the good fight. No action is too small.
After placing the candle, set an intention, meditate, say a prayer, chant. But make it something positive.
Envision the light entering the hearts of those who are now filled with darkness and hate and see it filling them. I for one, see their hearts growing three sizes, like the Grinch’s did.
Or simply see the darkness vanishing.
It only takes a single light to abolish the darkness!
Believe it.
Please be consistent and light your candle every night.
Repeat your intention or prayer either silently or to yourself.
Dedicate yourself to performing this practice every night and, if possible, at the same time. Encourage others to join you, your neighbors as well as your family.
In the end, you can say that we all did it together.

The hope is for people to see these lights and know that any good resistance was built on hope. The hope is in the light. Keep going. Keep up the good fight. No action is too small

Cori Bush

Cori Anika Bush is an American politician, nurse, pastor, and Black Lives Matter activist who served as the U.S. representative for Missouri's 1st congressional district from 2021 to 2025. The district includes all of the city of St. Louis and most of northern St. Louis County.

Progressives who know Bush really like her. They like that she doesn’t back away from tough rhetoric like “defund the police” when the party’s political winds currently favor a tougher-on-crime stance.

And they like that her words are followed by actions: She recently voted against a package of bills on policing before it ultimately passed in the House.

Many liberal Democrats also love that she regularly embraces policy fights that push the Biden administration farther than officials often want to go.

“Cori Bush is fantastic,” said Cenk Uygur, host of the left-wing show The Young Turks. “Biden needs to be challenged from the left.”

Demographically, Bush ticks a lot of the boxes the progressive wing is looking for in their next presidential candidate: She’s young (46), Midwestern, a Black woman and, perhaps most notably, is familiar with the country’s working class in a way that puts her in touch with many Americans.

But the very things progressives love about her could also alienate the broader electorate, including moderate Democrats who view her as too controversial for a general election audience. She’s also much less known than other members of the squad, including Ocasio-Cortez, making a possible 2024 bid more of an uphill battle.

Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., speaks to the crowd during the second March for Our Lives rally in support of gun control on Saturday, June 11, 2022, in Washington. (Associated Press)

Ayanna Pressley

Ayanna Soyini Pressley is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district since 2019. This district includes the northern three quarters of Boston, most of Cambridge, parts of Milton, as well as all of Chelsea, Everett, Randolph, and Somerville.

Pressley broke with other “squad” members when she endorsed Warren over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, staying true to the Massachusetts delegation’s biggest liberal who many in the party celebrate.

After defeating former Rep. Michael Capuano in the 7th Congressional District’s Democratic primary in 2018, Pressley has become a local sensation in her own right.

She got the attention of voters who saw her advocacy on gender and racial justice issues and, most recently, on student debt relief as much needed priorities in Congress, especially at a time of less racial, generational and ideological diversity in the House.

That support has continued to grow to a wider electorate and an elevated presence in the chamber. In 2020, Pressley, who is now 48, ran for reelection without a primary opponent, solidifying her standing among constituents in the solidly blue district.

Like other newer representatives, she’s not a broadly known entity. But she has taken steps to raise her public stature, including stumping for Warren and speaking publicly about her experience recovering from sexual assault, moves that could help her galvanize support among women and other key constituencies.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) is seen during a House Financial Services Committee hearing to discuss the Semiannual Monetary Policy Report to Congress on Thursday, June 23, 2022. (Greg Nash)

Stacey Abrams

Stacey Yvonne Abrams is an American politician, lawyer, voting rights activist, and author who served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017, serving as minority leader from 2011 to 2017.

Democrats are wondering aloud what the predominant political narrative will be around Abrams, 48, after November.

If she wins a tough rematch to be Georgia’s next governor against Republican incumbent Brian Kemp, she is expected to jump to many Democrats’ shortlists for viable candidates.

Abrams already caught Biden’s attention during his vice presidential search, and her signature issue of voting rights could become a powerful rallying cry at a time when Democrats accuse Republicans of engaging in efforts to curb access to the ballot box.

Democrats, including some top fixtures in Biden’s inner circle, widely regard her as competent, well liked and in touch with many of the progressive issues voters care about. That ranges from things like climate change and affordable housing to expanding Medicaid and investing in rural parts of the country that have largely fallen to Republicans.

If she doesn’t win, however, her immediate political future is less certain. Polls show her several points behind Kemp, with Democrats deploying resources to help make sure voters come out for her on Election Day.

“If you are a Democratic candidate and you lose your race, there’s kind of nowhere for you to go,” Wilson said. “Republicans are more willing to have candidates run for higher office that don’t check all their boxes. Democrats want to fall in love, and we nominate super qualified people.”

But being “super qualified” often doesn’t guarantee victory, she added.

Supporting Older Americans’ Basic Needs: Health Care, Income, Housing, and Food

Justice In Aging

After working all their lives, many older adults in our communities cannot afford health and long term care, struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, and don’t have enough cash on hand to pay the utilities and get where they need to go.

A combination of federal programs help Americans meet these basic needs and thrive as they grow older. These programs work together, forming a web of support that is critical to their success. For example, without resources to buy healthy food, older adults with diabetes or heart disease would jeopardize their health. Without long-term services and supports, many older adults would not be able to afford to live safely at home. Without housing assistance, many older adults on fixed incomes would have to choose between paying for rent or medicine. Older adults whose only income is from Supplemental Security Income (SSI) would not be able to afford groceries without the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or pay the rent without rental assistance, or see the doctor without Medicaid.
