Trade war on… penguins? US President Donald Trump announced tariffs on Wednesday that he argues will help the US economy to flourish. The list of 185 places hit with a minimum 10 percent tariff includes territories like the Heard and McDonald Islands — completely uninhabited by humans and home only to penguins and seals. Good luck collecting tax from them…

The U.S.’s 2022 average tariff rate was 2.72%.
But after President's Trump tariffs announcement, the average U.S. tariff rate under the new plan is at 29%.
Countries listed like Turkey (7.48%), South Korea (5.73%), and Switzerland (3.16%), have higher tariffs than the 2022 U.S. rate, but far lower than the projected 29%.

Under the Biden administration, the app was the primary way for people to make an appointment at a U.S. point of entry to seek asylum. The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) removal of the app canceled long-awaited appointments for 30,000 people and leaves no avenue for people stranded in Mexico waiting to seek asylum. Trump/Tate Brothers Involvement? Accused of rape, human trafficking and money laundering, freed from travel restrictions in Romania after several high-level White House officials took an interest in their case. It's unclear what, if any, role Donald Trump's administration may have played in their release, but one of Trump's top envoys is said to have raised the case with Romania's Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu at a security conference in Munich earlier this month. When asked about the Tates at the White House on Thursday, President Trump said: "I know nothing about that." But the brothers have been the subject of recent high-level discussions between the US and Romania. Romanian officials say US counterparts brought up the brothers' case with the Romanian government earlier this month, a story first reported by the Financial Times. The Tate brothers are Trump supporters and also have ties to figures in his administration. One of Tate's lawyers now works as White House liaison to the US justice department. Paul Ingrassia was part of a team representing the Tate brothers in a defamation lawsuit they filed in Florida against several of their alleged victims. Ingrassia also acted as Tate's publicist and says he got the influencer onto a show hosted by Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host. He has praised Tate in online posts. In one dating from July 2023, he called Tate "an extraordinary human being" who was offering "a dying West some hope for renewal". The Tates have also been talked about by several people in Trump's orbit, including Donald Trump Jr and Elon Musk. Trump Jr once called Tate's detention in Romania "absolute insanity". Musk reinstated Andrew Tate's account, which had been banned on X, and suggested, perhaps in jest, that Tate would make a good UK prime minister.Joseph McBride, a lawyer representing the Tates in a defamation case they have filed against several of their accusers in Florida, said in a statement: "They feel secure in America for several reasons, the primary one being that Donald Trump is the president." Meanwhile, Ron DeSantis antagonizes MAGA supporters by going after Andrew Tate. The Florida governor quickly made it clear that Tate, the social media figure popular in some right-wing circles, wasn't welcome in the state. To date, Florida has opened their own criminal investigation into Tate brothers ... https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/ron-desantis-antagonizes-maga-supporters-andrew-tate-rcna194890

The Alarming Moves You Might Have Missed 3/13/2025
-
Lost in the noise of the past two weeks, Trump has taken unprecedented steps to undermine the one branch of government he doesn’t fully control — the judiciary. Here’s what you need to know:
-
Fired DOJ Officials – Trump dismissed Justice Department officials involved in investigations against him, including more than a dozen prosecutors.
-
Revoked Security Clearances – Trump revoked security clearances for former intelligence officials who criticized him, including attorneys from Perkins Coie, which worked on opposition research during the 2016 election.
-
Targeting Legal Challenges – Trump signed an executive order requiring anyone challenging his policies in court to post a bond covering the government’s legal fees — forfeited if the case fails.
-
Punishing Nonprofits – Trump is tightening the noose on nonprofits by making it financially and legally impossible for them to fight back. This means charities and advocacy groups working to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, and environmental justice could be crippled — exactly the goal of authoritarian regimes.

The organization, with a budget of roughly $270 million and more than 2,000 employees, broadcasts in 49 languages. It has a weekly estimated audience of more than 361 million people. (NYT) "Trump, a long time VoA critic, had already stirred fears at the agency by tapping Kari Lake to serve as a special adviser there. While the president doesn’t directly appoint the head of VOA, Trump had nominated conservative activist L. Brent Bozell III to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which would make the decision. 3/14/2025 DOGE cuts at TSA hit Canine (K-9) bomb sniffing units. DOG FOOD, VET VISITS AND KENNELING ARE ON HOLD IMMEDIATELY, AS THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION DEEMS THEM A WASTE AND ABUSE! SO THE TSA IS NO LONGER ALLOWED TO PROPERLY CARE FOR THE BOMB AND OTHER CONTRABAND SNIFFING DOGS AT THE AIRPORT! WHICH MEANS BOMBS, FENTANYL, AND OTHER ILLEGAL STUFF CAN ENTER THE COUNTRY..OR THEY STARVE THEM, AND HAVE NO MEDICAL CARE FOR THEIR SERVICE AND MAKE THEM WORK UNTIL THEY DROP DEAD WHILE IN SERVICE. This is one reason I'm not a big fan of working dogs. We need to safeguard them, and often, we don't. It may be temporary, but how long?? And what happens to the brave dogs in the meantime?

Meanwhile, reports the NYT, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau refuses to die. Even though Musk's DOGE team gutted the agency and even pried the letters of the name of the agency off the front of the building. Last week, the agency’s consumer response team was called back to work to tackle a backlog of 16,000 complaints, including dozens from homeowners facing imminent foreclosures. The bureau’s Fair Lending Office has resumed preparing its annual report to Congress. And the front page of the agency’s website, which had generated a 404 error message starting on the day Trump officials arrived at the bureau, is working again. The consumer bureau is emerging as a test case for the boundaries of Mr. Trump’s power to unilaterally hobble government agencies. For nearly a month, the bureau’s staff union and other groups have battled the Trump administration in federal court cases in Washington and Maryland, arguing that only Congress can formally close the bureau, which was created in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Which occurred under Republican President George W Bush. Links to New York Times and The Hill articles:

3/23/2025Illegal Activity Underway:
-
Many undocumented immigrants file tax returns with the IRS, providing details about their residences, families, employers, and earnings. The IRS has historically encouraged tax compliance by issuing Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) to those without Social Security numbers.
-
Federal law strictly protects this information. Under 26 U.S. Code § 6103, tax return data is confidential and cannot be shared with other federal agencies, including immigration enforcement. Unauthorized disclosure violates 26 U.S. Code § 7213, making it a felony offense punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and mandatory termination of employment for federal employees involved.
-
Despite these protections, an agreement is underway to grant the Department of Homeland Security (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) access to these tax records, reversing long-standing IRS policy and raising serious concerns about legal violations and the erosion of taxpayer trust. The Trump administration has already replaced the top IRS lawyer who resisted such cooperation—a shift toward using confidential tax data for immigration enforcement purposes, in direct conflict with existing federal law.

3/23/2025 TRUMP has been trying to pin a crime on Joe Biden, claiming someone in the White House was using an autopen to sign pardons that Biden never knew about. Trump even had his press secretary tell reporters they needed to investigate that.
-
Well golly gee, any time Trump accuses somebody of something, it very often turns out that he is doing that very thing, himself.
-
Here we go again.
-
Fact #1 is that Trump gave many of the writers of Project 2025 important jobs in his Administration.
-
Fact #2 is that stacks of Executive Orders were already prepared on Day One for him to sign.
-
Fact #3 is that those orders continue to be signed and released on a daily basis. (Along with other things Trump comes up with out of the blue on Truth Social).
-
Fact #4 is that he goes to Mar-a-Lago to golf every weekend, and yet the flow of orders never stops.
-
So does Trump just have someone sign orders for him when he is too busy with other things to sign them?
-
Or has someone decided just to autopen things themselves, and skip Trump completely?
-
Stay tuned.
-
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
-
Despite Trump's claim that he never signed it, the president’s digital signature does appear on the version of the proclamation available on the Federal Register website.
-
The President’s statement immediately raised alarm bells for some.
-
“If that’s true, if Donald Trump did not actually sign that proclamation, it’s a big problem because the law specifically requires a proclamation by the president,” asked CNN political analyst Elie Honig, according to The Hill.
-
AND THEN HIS SPOKESPERSON CAME UP WITH THE LAMEST EXCUSE OF ALL
-
“President Trump was obviously referring to the original Aliens Enemies Act that was signed back in 1798,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement. However, the question that prompted Trump’s answer specifically referred to a federal judge’s point that was raised earlier in the day during a court hearing.
-
Judge James Boasberg asked lawyers for the government why the president’s proclamation was “essentially signed in the dark” on the evening of March 14 and then Venezuelan migrants were “rushed onto planes” on the morning of March 15. Those challenging the use of the act say it was done hastily to skirt criminal and immigration laws.

Trump's Lies Vs. Reality
Subsidies/Trade Deficit
-
Trump Lie: Trump said March 13: "In the case of Canada, we're spending $200 billion a year to subsidize Canada."
-
Reality: Trump has repeatedly exaggerated the U.S.-Canada trade deficit which is closer to $35.7 billion, according to the latest trade data released from the U.S. Census Bureau on March 6. The overwhelming driver of the deficit with Canada is that the U.S. buys a lot of unrefined oil from Canada. If you take out energy, Canada is running a small deficit with the United States.
Dairy
-
Trump Lie: Trump said on March 7: "In Canada, we find that they're charging us over 200% for dairy products"
-
Reality: The over 200% tariffs on U.S. dairy products are only triggered if U.S. dairy exports exceed certain yearly duty-free limits, and U.S. dairy manufacturers say they have never been close to exceeding these limits. These tariffs were negotiated during the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which Mr. Trump signed during his first term.
Fentanyl
-
Trump Lie: March 4: "They have allowed fentanyl to come into our country at levels never seen before, killing hundreds of thousands of our citizens."
-
Reality: Trump cited Canada's failure to halt the flow of illicit drugs as a reason for imposing tariffs, saying that fentanyl has been coming from the country "at levels never seen before." He claimed, "The fentanyl coming through Canada is massive." In 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the U.S.-Canada border, accounting for roughly 0.2% of all fentanyl seized by CBP that year. By contrast, approximately 21,100 pounds — about 96.6% of the total — was seized at U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump administration and attorneys lied to a judge, not surprised. USA TODAYVenezuelan women deported under Alien Enemies Act were returned to US, lawyers say WASHINGTON − "Lawyers for Venezuelans fighting their removal said Monday that women were returned to the U.S. after El Salvador refused to accept them. That would seem to contradict Justice Department claims in court that they couldn't turn around President Donald Trump's deportation flights under the Alien Enemies Act. Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ordered a temporary halt to deportation flights March 15 while the case is litigated. But two flights appear to have taken off that night after his verbal order halting the flights and a written order that government lawyers insisted they obeyed. Government lawyers argued the verbal order was unforceable. The lawyers have refused to provide details about when the flights took off, how many people they carried and where they landed, but El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele said on social media his country received 238 alleged members of Venezuela's crime gang Tren de Aragua and 23 alleged members of MS-13. Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward Foundation, which is representing Venezuelans in the lawsuit, said the return of the women signaled that all of the deportees could have been brought back to the U.S. under Boasberg’s order temporarily halting the flights...." https://www.usatoday.com/.../venezuelan.../82642086007
