DARVO

DARVO is an acronym that stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. It describes a pattern of behavior used by perpetrators of abuse, often in situations where they are being held accountable for their actions.

Here's a breakdown of each component:

  • Deny: The perpetrator denies any wrongdoing or involvement in the abuse.

  • Attack: They attack the victim's credibility, character, or even the validity of their claims.

  • Reverse Victim & Offender: The perpetrator attempts to portray themselves as the victim, while simultaneously portraying the victim as the offender.

This manipulation tactic is often used to deflect responsibility and undermine the victim's experience. DomesticShelters.org explains that the DARVO tactic can be insidious and difficult to recognize. Keystone Law states that understanding DARVO is important for both victims and those supporting them, as it can help them recognize the patterns of manipulation and protect themselves.
